China is once again the host to a major luxury brand project – this time an ongoing ‘Lady Dior Travelling Art and Handbag Exhibition’, showing at Shanghai’s 66 Plaza from May 13th through June 15th.
The show features an array of renowned photographers, filmmakers, and visual artists, who were asked to create work inspired by the iconic Lady Dior handbag; which was made famous in 1995 when the first edition was given to Princess Diana by the first lady of France, Bernadette Chirac.
Participating artists include Kourtney Roy, Kohei Nawa, Peter Lindbergh and Olympia Scarry, as well as China’s Quentin Shih (a.k.a. Shi Xiaofan).
The exhibition comes after Chanel ran a show at the same venue last year while a Diane Von Furstenberg exhibit also opened in Beijing just last month. On top of that Dior ran an earlier exhibition with Chinese Artists at the UCCA gallery in Beijing in 2008.
All of the aforementioned shows feature collaborations with Chinese artists, or work inspired by China, such as Li Song Song’s giant Lady Dior installation, “Bag of Light”.
With the opening of a new Louis Vuitton exhibit in Beijing only days away, China is definitely a focus point for fashion and art lovers. Below are some of our favorite images from the Lady Dior exhibit in Shanghai.

Legendary photographer Peter Lindbergh came last week to Beijing to launch his expedition ’The Uknown’ at one of the top 798 art district galleries, UCCA. Vogue China Editor, Angelica Cheung, and Vogue Italia Editor Franco Sozzani joined Linbergh for a public debate on fashion photography at the event (April 2nd), curated by UCCA director Jerome Sans. Franco tweeted from the talk “I’m in Beijing with Peter Lindbergh talking about photography with young students…. Very interesting!”
Also in attendance was Vogue China International Fashion Director at Large, Nicoletta Santoro – who right at the start was invited by Peter Lindbergh to take a bow from the front row of the audience. The Italian stylist was in town to work with Lindbergh on a new Vogue China fashion shoot.
The debate at UCCA was a fascinating insight into the thoughts of key decision makers at the top of the fashion industry, now, and over the past two or three decades.
Lindbergh gave insights into his photography – explaining how digital technology has changed fashion shoots and his own shooting style! To see Peter Lindbergh talking about his exhibition The Uknown click here
